Gimistory's

Artistic Vision

Gimistory’s artistic vision extends beyond storytelling into the visual arts, recognizing that painting is also a form of storytelling.

Each year, we collaborate with visual artists to bring the festival’s creative concepts to life.

Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette

Our 2025 theme, Welcome to Storyland, celebrated the magic of stories and the way they shift, grow, and travel through time and imagination.

Caymanian artist Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette created a visual interpretation of “The Caymanian Land of Stories” - drawing on folklore, memory, dreams, and stories being created today. Her work uses individual pieces that can be moved and rearranged, reflecting how stories evolve as they pass from one teller to the next.

“The inspiration behind the iconography is my desire to highlight the folklore we do have, to share it in a visual way that makes it more alive… But I also took inspiration from stories being created and told now… in an attempt to innovate and build upon what is already set as our Heritage.”
Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette

For 2026, Nasaria returns with the theme Nocturne, continuing Gimistory’s tradition of using visual art to illuminate our stories, folklore, and cultural imagination.

The Original Visual Voice of Gimistory

Dr. Henry Muttoo

Gimistory 2017

Gimistory began with the vision of Dr. Henry Muttoo, whose creativity helped establish the festival as a bold and distinctly Caribbean celebration of storytelling. As its founding Artistic Director, he understood that storytelling could live far beyond the spoken word and that it could be seen, felt, imagined, and experienced.

His artistic work gave Gimistory a visual world of its own, drawing inspiration from Caribbean culture, everyday life, and the imaginative possibilities within a good story. His designs became part of the fabric of the festival, creating an identity that audiences could recognize and connect with.

What makes Muttoo’s contribution particularly significant is the way he bridged heritage and contemporary creativity. His work invited audiences to look at familiar stories and cultural traditions differently, while creating a foundation that subsequent artists and storytellers could build upon.

For Gimistory, his artwork is more than archival material – it is part of the festival’s living history. The visual language he established continues to inspire how we think about storytelling, creativity, and the ways Caribbean stories can be shared with audiences at home and around the world.
